Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the blow of this epic fail.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer level of unadulterated absurdity here and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you remember that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a sigh.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?

Awful Day Ever
It all started with a case of terrible hair. I couldn't figure it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I stumbled and dropped my lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely late for a very important appointment.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
